History of the Church in Central African Republic (CAR)

Central African Republic (CAR) is part of the Cameroon Yaoundé Mission. It has never had young missionaries serve there before and has had an on-going civil war since 2012.

In 1992, a Peace Corp member of the Church working in the capital city, Bangui was set apart by the DR Kinshasa mission president to be a district missionary. She taught the gospel to groups of interested Central Africans and on September 19, 1992, 20 people were baptized, and on 20 September, two branches were organized in Bangui.

A senior missionary couple, Raymond and Christianne Fourtina, from Bordeaux, France, arrived in Bangui in January 1993. In July of that year, the Church received legal recognition from the Central African government.

On November 10, 2012, Elder Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles came and dedicated the country for the preaching of the gospel. There were 128 in attendance, in a small chapel.

Luckily, Elder Holland was able to dedicate the country a little before the the civil war broke out in November 2012.

Because of the civil war, the number of branches dropped from two to one.

Even though there are few members in CAR, as of 2018, there were 5 missionaries serving from the branch.

In 2016, there was a chance that African missionaries may be sent to CAR but the civil war worsened. Also in early 2019, President Thompson mentioned that if things improved, missionaries may be sent to CAR but as of 2023 CAR is still too unsafe with for missionaries with general lawlessness and violence.

In March 2018, President Thompson visited CAR. He had to petition to Africa South Area leadership many times to be allowed to visit the country and did so without being accompanied by Sister Thompson.
